Quick quiz. The former U.S. ambassador to Greece resigned today. Who was her husband?
If you get your news from national outlets, you probably said, “I don’t know. I didn’t even know she was ever married.” You know her as Don Jr.’s ex-fiancée. That’s the tag. The Daily Beast ran her confirmation under the headline “Don Jr.’s Ex.”
She was Trump’s appointee, so the scandal touches his administration directly. Calling her Don Jr.’s ex-fiancée goes further. It ties her to his family and to a general claim of Trump circle corruption.
Here is the answer. From 2001 to 2006, Kimberly Guilfoyle was married to Gavin Newsom. She was first lady of San Francisco during his first two years as mayor. Her father was a close adviser to Newsom until his death in 2008.
Newsom is now governor of California and a likely 2028 presidential contender.
Trump nominated her in December 2024. The Senate confirmed her in September 2025, after Republicans changed the rules to move nominees in bulk.
Today she resigned after the White House asked her to. The Wall Street Journal reports that she asked a Trump donor to help pay down her American Express bill while her confirmation was pending. Her attorney disputes that the messages are authentic. A separate Journal report on her promotion of gas deals involving a Greek company led top Democrats on the House and Senate foreign affairs committees to ask the State Department to review her conduct.
That is a real story. Whether she is guilty is not what this piece is about.
What this piece is not claiming: It is not claiming Newsom had anything to do with her appointment. He didn’t. It is not claiming their marriage matters to her conduct in Athens. It almost certainly doesn’t.
The claim is narrower. When a figure in a scandal connects to two famous men, the press picks which one goes in the headline. Here the pick is Trump Jr. Newsom shows up in the San Francisco papers. KRON4 led with “former first lady of SF.” Nationally, he appears a few paragraphs down, if he appears at all.
The New York Times’ story on her resignation names Don Jr. in the third paragraph. Newsom arrives in the twelfth.
Most online readers quit around the halfway mark. Paragraph twelve is a long way down.
Reporters know this. It is why they write in an inverted pyramid, most important facts first.
I have heard this story on the news a lot. Not once did I hear that she was married to Gavin Newsom.
There is a defensible reason for that. Trump appointed her, and the Trump Jr. relationship is more recent.
There is also a test. Swap the parties. A Democratic president appoints his son’s ex to an embassy. She turns out to be the ex-wife of a Republican governor who is running for president. She lands in a donor-money story. How many headlines leave out the governor’s name?
You already know the answer.
So here is the quiz again. Who was the former ambassador to Greece married to?
Now you know. Most readers won’t.
